HALF-DAY BOAT AND TAXI TOUR OF KATSE DAM WALL, BOTANICAL GARDEN AND BIRD ISLAND (HA ‘MA PEETE)

(This trip is tailored for guests travelling as a group of 12 to 16 people or guests travelling as smaller groups and registering with reception for assistance to form a group of 12 to 16.)

The tour splits the guests into two groups travelling as follows:

Group 1:

  1. Leaves Motebong lodge by taxi to start the dam wall tour – drive is about 1 hour and tour about 45 minutes. The tour entails a briefing on the history of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP), a water transfer scheme between Lesotho and RSA, with water flowing from Lesotho through tunnels and ending up in the Vaal dam.

  2. From the dam wall the tour will visit the botanical gardens for refreshments and to view different plants. The garden was started with aim of preserving plants and genetic resources natural to the valleys of the rivers to be dammed – mainly Malibamatso river valley, that were threatened upon the inundation of the dam. Many of the plants were also known by Basotho and used for medicinal purposes, curing different maladies. While others a simply to be appreciated for their beauty.

  3. From the botanical gardens, the group goes to the Katse jetty to join Letata la Motebong for the boat ride home. The trip home which lasts about 1.5hrs and includes a visit to bird island (Ha ‘Ma Peete) to view an amazing colony of the white breasted cormorant along with at least 8 other species of big birds on the northern slopes of the island. The tour also goes past the Matsoku tunnel outlet, passes below the iconic Mphosong bridge across Katse dam (about 700m long), passing the water intake tower for the transfer tunnel to RSA. The tour then passes Katse fish farm before arriving at the lodge.

Group 2:

  1. Leaving the Motebong Lodge jetty one hour after group one, past the Bird island above.
  2. Disembark at Katse jetty to join group 1 at the botanical gardens for refreshments and viewing.
  3. Take-over the taxi and proceed to the Katse dam wall tour as described above then take the scenic route travel back to Motebong Lodge, passing points of interest including some of the advance infrastructure – roads, electricity and telecommunications for phase II of the LHWP.
