The physical environment of Ha Lejone and the Lesotho Highlands necessitates the use of the infamous Basotho ponies, which every household has at least one of. Motebong provides pony trekking in Lesotho as an exciting activity on these sure-footed yet gentle ponies. These are owned by the local community members and the charges for the ponies are determined by the local pony-owner association.
For horse riding in Lesotho, the association requires a day’s notice if possible, especially where there are larger groups wishing to try their hand at these. Excursions range from short 30-minute rides for the younger ones in the camp, to 1-hour rides into Ha Lejone village to 2 – 3-hour rides into the surrounding mountainside. There are always guides to accompany guests on these excursions, and to assist with the guiding of the ponies. No previous horse-riding experience is required.
For the experienced rider, we have now introduced a 20 kilometer horse ride across going across the dam and back using the foot bridges that are designed to connect the villages that were separated when the dam was inundated.
This route takes the rider through some very scenic parts of the areas surrounding the dam
