Lesotho offers various spots for fishing, mainly offering trout and yellow fish. The fishing areas are mainly in the highlands parts of the districts of Maseru, Quthing, Qachas Nek Mokhotlong and Thaba Tseka Butha Buthe and Leribe.
These areas will be around the main rivers such as Makhaleng – Maseru and Mohales hoek, Senqunyane – Thaba Tseka and Maseru, Tsoelike – Sehlabathebe, Khubelu – Mokhotlong, Senqu – most of the western highlands from Mokhotlong, to Quthing and Malibamatso – Butha Buthe and Leribe as well Katse dam from Ha Lejone to Bokong at the dam wall and a few other lakes around.
Fishing in the rivers is restricted for the winter months of May to August for Trout and November to January for yellow fish where cash and release is recommended to allow for spawning. Fishing is however still allowed in the dams during this period, though for sustainable fishing it is encouraged and fish below 350cm be released back into the water while which a daily limit of 4 fish per angler per day is set.
Motebong lodge hosts fishing throughout the year as the lodge has its own frontage of the dam and thus a wlaking distance from the chalets. In summer when fishing is allowed in the rivers, Motebong is within easy access of three good fishing rivers – up-stream Malibamatso river about feom 4 kilometres, Bokong river which flows into Katse dam 1 kilometer from the lodge and Matsoku above the weir collecting water to transfer to Katse Dam above 20 kilometres downstream from the lodge.
Fishing permits are required for fishing in the rivers and dams in the country. These can be bought at lodge for M50 (R50 equivalent) per month and M200 per year and are valid for fishing throughout the country.

Accommodation at the mountain lodge is made up of fully-furnished and fully-equipped self catering cottages of varying sizes and accommodating a varying number of people. These cottages are heated with coal or electric and gas stoves, which is critical during the winter months. They are cleaned daily by our housekeeping staff with the exception of a couple of days when the staff is also given time off
The Lesotho Highlands and Motebong mountain lodge offer a host of activities both within the camp and in the surrounding highlands. Although a place for rest and relaxation, those looking for some excitement, fun and games have also come to the right place. Notwithstanding this, one gets tempted to sit back, relax and do absolutely nothing
Motebong has committed itself to recruiting from Ha Lejone and will continue to do so where the skills and experience is there. With the exception of the Chef, all our staff are from Ha Lejone and surrounds, and have been given the necessary training for the roles they occupy at Motebong. This is a practice that Motebong will continue to pursue for as long as is possible into the future.
Over and above its products and services for its visitors, Motebong Tourism believes in Responsible Tourism. To this end it has undertaken various initiatives in and around Ha Lejone where it is based, and from where it sources its staff. All of this mentoring and efforts to support the community enterprises and individual business initiatives are done entirely at motebong lodge’s costs
